From Security Systems to Storm Recovery: AJ and Rafael’s Journey with Rytech Restoration

How Two Friends Achieved $1M in Their First Year and Expanded Rytech’s Presence in Chicagoland

In the world of business, some of the most impactful transformations begin with a simple conversation—and that’s exactly how AJ Alghzali and Rafael Araiza found their new path. What started as a casual chat at a franchise expo led these long-time friends and business partners from the world of cybersecurity into the fast-moving, mission-driven industry of disaster restoration.

Today, they’re not just franchise owners—they’re multi-unit operators, helping homeowners and businesses across Chicagoland get back to normal after unexpected water, mold, or fire damage. This is their Rytech story.

From Surveillance Systems to Restoration Solutions

AJ and Rafael had built a successful security systems business, often entering homes that had just experienced water damage. “Cybersecurity will always be part of my DNA,” AJ says, “but we kept running into customers who had water issues. We realized there was a real opportunity there.”

That realization turned into action after a chance meeting with Rytech’s franchise development team at a franchise show. “It was a no-brainer,” AJ recalls. “The platform was proven, and the people were solid.”

Launching Rytech Restoration of Lake County

The duo launched their first franchise in Lake County, Indiana, a location close to AJ’s home in St. John and surrounded by a network of professional and personal relationships. But like any new venture, it came with challenges.

“We didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into,” Rafael admits. “But we had incredible support from the corporate team. Big shoutout to David Ayers for showing us the ropes.”

Despite the learning curve, they hit the ground running—literally. By combining hustle with local branding, they made Rytech a household name in their community. In their first full year, they surpassed $1 million in restoration work.

One project, in particular, stands out. “Helping families during a catastrophe was a proud moment,” AJ says. “That’s when we realized we were doing more than building a business—we were making a real impact.”

Scaling Up: Enter Central Cook County

Not ones to slow down, AJ and Rafael set their sights on expansion after attending Rytech’s Franchise Owners Conference. “Hearing from other owners lit a fire under us,” says Rafael.

With guidance from Rytech’s corporate team, they strategically selected Central Cook County as their second territory. “We mapped out the demand and found a perfect fit in Chicago and its surrounding communities,” AJ explains.

Lessons from their Lake County launch gave them a solid foundation for success. “We understood the business a lot better the second time around,” says Rafael. “It made the expansion process smoother and more strategic.”

Refining Their Roles and Growing Together

As multi-unit operators, their partnership continues to evolve. “We meet weekly with our sales team and participate in monthly national meetings. We’re constantly growing,” AJ shares.

They’ve also begun taking on new roles to drive their business forward. “We’re always learning and adapting, and we rely on each other’s strengths to keep growing,” Rafael adds.

Marketing, Visibility, and Community Impact

To drive brand awareness in Central Cook County, AJ and Rafael focus on strong local marketing and SEO strategies. “Social media, Google, and our website have been huge for lead generation,” AJ says.

And the community response? “People are excited we opened a location in Central Cook. They appreciate having a trusted restoration partner close by.”

The most common services they’re seeing? Water, mold, and fire damage—the core of Rytech’s expertise. They continue to invest in industry knowledge and training to stay ahead.

Advice for Future Franchise Owners

For anyone considering a Rytech franchise, their advice is clear: “Be involved. Be ready to learn. And make sure your partnership has clear communication.”

What surprised them the most? “There’s so much more to restoration than people realize,” Rafael laughs. “It’s technical, it’s emotional, and it’s incredibly rewarding.”

As for the future, they have big plans. “We want to keep growing throughout the Midwest,” AJ says. “And one day, we’d love to open a training facility and flood house to support other franchisees.”
